Lloyd’s Register Foundation is a UK charity established in 2012. Their mission is to protect the safety of life and property, and to advance transport and engineering education and research.

They aim to be known worldwide as a leading supporter of engineering-related research, training and education. Through their grant making programme is designed to connect science, safety and society by supporting research of the highest quality and promoting skills and education.



Before Flexi-Grant®, Lloyd’s Register Foundation were using a combination of paper, spreadsheets, and emails to manage their grant-giving processes. With 80+ active grants, and a 2-part grant scheme (offering awards ranging from £2000 through to £2m), this was a lot to maintain without a dedicated system.

Key Stakeholders

On a day to day basis Flexi-Grant® is used by Sara Parker-Clark, the Senior Grants Officer, and her team. They use it to handle the application process, workflow, responding to applicants, peer reviews and reporting on their grants portfolio. As well as Sara and her team, their colleagues in the Finance department use the system to process and approve payments, alongside exporting a complete financial forecast while others in the organisation use it for reporting on how their grants are spent.

Challenges & Solutions

Lloyd’s Register Foundation had a number of key feature requirements they needed to help them manage their grant program – these included:

  • Reporting and monitoring
  • Print/send application forms
  • Separate record for each applicant
  • Being able to search for historic applicants
  • Hold historic data
  • Contact management – allocate tasks/alerts to staff members
  • Generate emails/letters
  • Personal sign-in

These were all features that Lloyd’s Register Foundation could find within Flexi-Grant®, so all that was left to do was agree on an implementation process and a timeline for delivery.
